Behavioral Health Services, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offer training for pre-doctoral psychology interns in the area of health service psychology. In the context of a VA medical center, the practice focuses on a whole person approach in interdisciplinary settings. The training follows the Scholar-Practitioner model, building on interns’ understanding of research and evidence-based practice. Interns are placed in two of three 6-month major rotations and one minor rotation. The two major rotation placements for the intern are Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program, commonly referred to as the Domiciliary and Chronic Pain/Behavioral Health/Primary Care Mental Health Integration. The minor rotation placement is 6-month long and one day a week at the Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center. The Internship in Health Service Psychology at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association.

Ø Under the supervision of licensed psychologists, serve as a consultant on a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, nurses, and allied health staff and provide brief evidence-based interventions to Veterans referred from their medical providers.
Ø Accurately assess for functional levels in intake interviews and advise clients basing on the understanding of presenting problems.
Ø Intervene with Veterans presenting with behavior problems, unhealthy habits, chronic comorbid conditions, difficult relationships, and other challenges that interfere with overall health and functioning.
Ø Collaborate with Veterans for their buy-in before proceeding to treatment planning.
Ø Assist Veterans in identifying and reduce potential barriers. Promote self-efficacy and motivations for positive behavioral changes.
Ø Arrange appropriate treatment by making referrals, recommending activities, or healthy habits that suit Veterans’ lives and needs, consulting with the multidisciplinary team, and following up with Veterans for treatment adherence or adjustment.
Ø Use screening tools and evidence-based measurements to detect and monitor mental health conditions.
Ø Co-facilitate five groups, Tobacco Cessation, MOVE, Women’s Group for Chronic Pain, Men’s Group for Chronic Pain, and the Neurobiology of Chronic Pain: Why I Hurt.

Ø Under the supervision of the Chief of the Domiciliary, a licensed psychologist, provided assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and crisis intervention services for Veterans with a broad range of mental illnesses, personality disorders, and substance use disorders in a residential care setting.
Ø Under the supervision of the Program Director of Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center (PRRC), a licensed clinical social worker, provided mental health services for Veterans suffering from severe and persistent mental illness (e.g., schizophrenia, schizoaffective mood disorder, bipolar disorder, major affective disorder, and PTSD) with significant functional impairment.

Heritage Psychiatric Health Center is a 26-bed psychiatric health facility (PHF) licensed by the State of California and is Joint Commission accredited. In a locked inpatient setting, psychiatric treatment is provided by the interdisciplinary team to adults aged 18+, who are in the acute phase of a mental illness or comorbid disorders. The majority of patients are admitted involuntarily. Some of high risk clients present life-threatening symptoms and are verbally and/or physically violent. The typical length of stay is 3-5 days.
